ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — You may have seen little free libraries throughout the Rochester region. They allow the community to grab a book and read for free.

Tuesday one local company gave more than 500 books to help these libraries grow.

"So the free little libraries are an organization that started to promote little libraries where people can just grab a book whether they have one to share or they need a book to read. So you can take one or grab one. You don't have to check it in or out like at a regular library and you take it home, read it and take it back to that one or a different one," Ruth Thompson said.

Books were collected from a company-wide book drive that began in December and received donations from employees throughout RG&E and Avangrid, RG&E's parent company.

In total, the company's book drive helped fill the shelves of more than 25 local little free libraries.

"Pride@avangrid is an organization that was recently just started in the past year. It is one of Avangrid's business relations groups that has just started and our mission is to allow our employees to be able to be their authentic self at work," Thompson said.

The group's message?

"To feel comfortable being who they are and supported and comfortable and in that we are supporting them through allyship, whether our own coworkers within the building and then our outreach to spread out to the community to let them know RG&E Avangrid is a supporter of the LBGTQ+ community is very important," Thompson said.

Each book donated today has a sticker in it to show Avangrids support for the community. Books were donated from the city area to the lake.

"There is so much that needs to be said awareness and acceptance and really love is just love so we all have our own feelings about it but we can be acceptant respectful of each other," Thompson said.
