Herb Alexander has spent the last three years working in different roles at Roberts Wesleyan College.
He started off as the director of multicultural student success, then transitioned to director of the office of diversity and equity. Now, he's a few weeks in to his new role as chief diversity officer and he has big plans for the campus community this school year.
"My top priority now is really changing the narrative of how organizations view the chief diversity officer role, including my organization," says Alexander. "For a while, and still currently, people view it as moreso a problem-addressing or fire-extinguishing type of role, and so my goal now is to make it more of a strategic advantage."
Alexander and his team launched a Candid Conversations event series at the college to create a space for dialogue about race and racial injustice. These events are open to both the campus community and the Greater Rochester community.
