ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — A city man is facing charges after police say he robbed a Tops Friendly Market and tried to steal a woman's car.

It happened at the store on West Avenue in Rochester around 4 p.m. on Tuesday.

Police say Ernest Douglas, 41, robbed one of the cashiers at gunpoint.

Officers say when he ran away, he tried to steal a car from a 76-year-old woman but she was able to fight him off. Other people nearby also helped.

They say Douglas took off but was caught a short time later.

Investigators say he was on parole for murder.

According to police, Douglas has been charged with robbery in the second, two counts of assault in the second and grand larceny in the fourth degree. They say additional charges may be coming. 

Douglas is set to be arraigned at the Hall of Justice Wednesday morning.
