ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) -  A Rochester man was indicted on Thursday for the April shooting death of Javon Sampson.

A grand jury formally charged Rakeem Lane, 32, with second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon.

On April 9, 2022, just after 5:00 p.m., Javon Sampson, 33, was shot and killed in front of 572 Chili Ave.

During the course of the investigation conducted by the Major Crimes Unit, Rakeem Lane was identified as the suspect who shot and killed Sampson.

Shortly after the murder, search warrants were executed at Queens and Kings Apparel store located at 569 Chili Ave as well as an apartment at 100 Salina St. The business was run by Lane, and the apartment was rented out to him.

It is still not yet known if the two knew each other, but a search of Sampson's residence recovered ammunition, a large quantity of drugs and drug paraphernalia, as well as packaging for the street sale of drugs.

A loaded handgun was also recovered from Lane. He is not allowed to possess a gun in New York State because of four previous felony convictions.
