ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Rochester’s unemployment rate continues to improve as we rebound from the pandemic recession. On Tuesday, the New York State Labor Department released unemployment rates for March.

The local rate was 3.8% last month. To put that in perspective, one year ago it was 6.1%. New York’s overall unemployment rate fell to 4.6% in March.

While our unemployment rate is getting better, we still have a lot of businesses in our area struggling to find and keep workers.

News10NBC spoke with RochsterWorks Executive Director Dave Seeley about the challenges.

For those still on the job hunt, RochesterWorks is teaming up with Monroe County and Monroe Community College to host a job fair at MCC’s downtown campus on Thursday to help connect people with the jobs they’re looking for. The event is free and open to the public. It will be from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the ‘High Falls’ Room, 3rd Floor at 321 State Street in Rochester. Free parking is available in Lot AA.

About 35 local employers across a variety of industries are scheduled to attend, including MKS Instruments, Hillside, M & T Bank, City of Rochester, The Pike Company, Thermo Fisher Scientific, University of Rochester, Strong Staffing, Jamestown Container, Rochester Institute of Technology, Monroe County Department of Public Safety, Monroe County Board of Elections, Eugenio Maria de Hostos Charter School, EG Industries, and East House, among others.
