ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) -  Police are investigating a deadly mass shooting at a house party on Pennsylvania Avenue that occurred early Saturday morning.

Officers responded to the area Short Street and Pennsylvania Avenue around 12:30 a.m. for reports of shots fired. Upon arrival, officers observed 100 people fleeing the area.

Police say two people are dead and 16 people were shot at a backyard party on Pennsylvania Avenue.

The Rochester Acting Police Chief Mark Simmons says  "This is truly a tragedy of epic proportions if you asked me, I mean 16 victims is unheard and for our community, whose right now going through so much, to have to be dealt with this tragedy, needlessly, for people who decide to act in a violent manner, is unfortunate and it's shameful and we are going to everything that we can as a department to bring those people involved to justice."

The other 14 victims were transported to  Rochester General Hospital and URMC. The 14 victims were between 17 and 23 years old. Police believe the 14 victims are in stable condition and their injuries do not appear to be life-threatening. Two additional people were hurt while trying to run away from the shooting.

Strong Memorial Hospital says the Kessler Trauma Center evaluated 10 people with gunshot wounds overnight, nine of them are believed to be victims from last night's shooting on Pennsylvania Avenue in Rochester.

  • Two of the patients have been admitted to Golisano Children's Hospital, one in the pediatric ICU and one in stable condition
  • Three adult patients have been admitted to Strong and are in stable condition
  • Five patients have been treated and released.

Strong Memorial Hospital says none of those injuries appear to be life-threatening.

The investigation is ongoing and no suspects are in custody at this time.
