ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — For years, Rochester was known for manufacturing jobs.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D, NY) says she wants to strengthen the country’s supply chain with the "Made in America Manufacturing Communities Act of 2022".

She unveiled the new legislation at Monroe Community College Thursday.

The bill would allow the Secretary of Commerce to designate certain areas, "manufacturing communities", which would make them eligible for federal assistance to encourage domestic production.

Gillibrand says the bill has strong bipartisan support and is one of her top priorities.

Rochester Mayor Malik Evans joined the senator.

"As this pandemic is showing us, the whole world has to build up our manufacturing capacity," Evans said. "Senator Gillibrand’s bill would bring much-needed stability to the economy and supply chain, and create the rising tide to raise all boats."

According to a recent analysis by an MIT professor, the Greater Rochester region is ranked number one in the nation as ripe for tech and economic investment and growth.
