ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The Jefferson Avenue Seventh-day Adventist Church is holding a back to school giveaway on Sunday for families in need.
The back to school giveaway will take place at Jefferson Community Service Center on Jefferson Avenue from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The church will hand out free backpacks, binders, pencils, pens, crayons, folders, and a variety of other materials for students in grades Pre-K through 12th grade.
"While Jefferson Avenue has received its fair share of media attention surrounding the death of Daniel Prude and Black Lives Matters protest, we'd like to change the narrative with a message of hope for parents and children in need of school supplies. And, although the COVID-19 pandemic has forced many school districts to utilize a hybrid online/virtual at-home learning environment, we recognize that some parents may still find it difficult to provide the necessities for their children due to work stoppages, furloughs, and other impacts of COVID-19. As a faith-based organization, we believe it is our responsibility to provide this service to our community and to lend a helping hand where and when we can." said Angela Tucker-Hill, Communications Director.
COVID-19 safety precautions will be required at this event, which includes wearing a mask and using hand sanitizer.
If you are unable to make it out today, you can call 585-364-1252 to arrange an appointment with the church.
