ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Small businesses are the engine that makes our community go, and this week, News10NBC is featuring a company that was formed to help job seekers focus on local opportunities.

Their service is particularly valuable right now as many people lost work due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This week our small business spotlight shines on ShiftDiff.

Two years ago, Amorette Miller was out of work and looking for a job, but quickly became frustrated by the existing job search websites.

"And although I found jobs that I was qualified for, they were already filled,” Miller said “It seemed like I was applying into a void."

That experience led her and her husband Raheem to start ShiftDiff, a job search site focused specifically on the Rochester area.

"I decided to start ShiftDiff with my husband so that job seekers in the Rochester area could find actual jobs that were available,” Miller said. “They weren't wasting their time during the application process."

"We're such a small region, a small town that the New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles kind of overwhelm the national sites. What's out there for us?” Miller said.

ShiftDiff is free for job seekers while employers pay a fee to post their job openings.

Miller says what sets them apart from other sites is the attention they pay to their clients.

"I think when you post your job on Shift Diff, you can feel like there's more of a personal touch and someone actually cares on the other side about doing business with you," Miller said.

That caring side was evident after the coronavirus pandemic hit.

The Millers decided to make the search site free for businesses to post job openings.

"We survived COVID-19,” Miller said. “If we can do that, we know we're going to stick around. I see us staying in Rochester and building trust in the community so that everyone knows they can go to Shift Diff and find a job."
