ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Shortages on furniture and appliances are becoming more and more common across the country, including here in Rochester.
Based on what News10NBC is hearing from shoppers and store owners, if you were to order a new stove today, there’s a good chance it would not arrive until after Thanksgiving.
The reason for the delays, like many other retail setbacks, is production limitations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While some factories have limited worker capacity to 50%, others had to shut down altogether.
"A lot of factories shut down initially,” says Rochester Appliance Operations Manager Jon Stowell. “You have a lot of people trying to get stuff done around the house, they're home more, they're working on projects, so there's a higher demand, a limited supply, and you're seeing the market struggle to adjust and accommodate for that."
Parts and items that would normally arrive the next day are taking up to six weeks to be delivered. Rochester Appliance is selling floor models when customers get desperate. One shopper even said he was told it could take up to four months for his items to arrive.
"A customer came in the other day, they were like ‘hey I've been to six places, just can't find something, can you help me out here?’" says Stowell.
Productions schedules are expected to get back to normal in the next 6-8 months. The best thing to do if you’re thinking you may need to replace an appliance or furniture item is to plan as far in advance as possible.
Columbus Day is usually a big day for furniture and appliance sales. If you’re planning on checking out Columbus Day sales tomorrow, it couldn’t hurt to call the store ahead of time to make sure they have the item you’re looking for in stock.
