ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — New York State Police say a woman is in custody after troopers say she drove a stolen ambulance from Utica to Rochester, ultimately leading to a  crash into Irondequoit Bay.

Trooper Mark O'Donnell told News10NBC police got a call from Utica Police about an ambulance that had been stolen from the area and was heading west on the Thruway.

According to our affiliates in Syracuse, the stolen Kunkele ambulance was taken from a Utica hospital. Our affiliate reports a state trooper spotted the vehicle when going through Verona around 10:55 a.m. O'Donnell said Troopers began following the ambulance at "reasonable speeds", and while Monroe County area troopers did not attempt to stop the vehicle,  two previous attempts were made to stop it with stingers, which were unsuccessful.

O'Donnell said the woman left the Thruway at the Victor exit before heading towards Rochester on 490. Police say the woman got off 490 at the Culver Road exit, officers tried to get the ambulance to stop, but they say the woman kept driving.

Around 12:30 p.m., the ambulance ended up crashing through a gate at the Newport Yacht Club into Irondequoit Bay on Seneca Road. O'Donnell said the woman then jumped out of the ambulance and swam to a passing boat. The boater helped the woman up, and she was ultimately taken into custody by the Monroe County Sherriff's Office.

As of 3:00 p.m., the ambulance was still underwater. An MCSO scuba team is on the scene.

Utica Police confirmed to News10NBC it is handling the criminal investigation
