ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — A young boy whose life was taken by gun violence lives on in an annual scholarship that helps students grow.

Tyshaun Cauldwell was only 10 years old when he was shot and killed by a stray bullet in 2001.

The crime spurred improvements in the JOSANA (Jay Orchard Street Area Neighborhood Association) neighborhood, including the Tyshaun Cauldwell Memorial Garden on Whitney Street and the Tyshaun Cauldwell Recreation Center on Campbell Street.

It also inspired a scholarship that annually awards four sixth-graders at School 17, where Cauldwell went to school.

This year's scholarship winners visited the memorial garden together on Friday to pay their respects.
