VIPER Task Force nets nearly 200 arrests in Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — A new, federal crackdown on violence in Rochester has resulted in nearly 200 arrests.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office gave an update on the Federal Violence Prevention and Elimination Response (VIPER) Task Force Monday.
As part of the effort, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Drug Enforcement Administration are helping Rochester Police target suspects charged with gun and violent crimes who’ve skipped bail.
It’s been up and running for more than three weeks now. In that time, it’s made 196 arrests in Rochester: 69 for guns, 41 for drugs, and 86 for violent felonies.
Officials say 51 illegally possessed or obtained guns have been taken off the street.
The VIPER Task Force will be in operation through next month.
