ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The Gates Police Department Tuesday released body camera footage from the interaction its officers had with Tyshon Jones, the man who was shot by a Rochester Police Officer early Wednesday morning after allegedly charging at the officer with a large knife.

On Tuesday, March 9, hours before Jones entered the city of Rochester, the Gates Police Department attempted to help Jones.

When the Rochester Police Department first announced Jones was the man who was killed, it also detailed his interactions with the Gates Police Department on Tuesday.

The RPD says Jones left his mother's house in Gates sometime during the later morning or early afternoon on March 9.

Between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., RPD said Jones was inside a store in Gates, someone bought food for him and Jones ended up following the person to their house.

The Gates Police Department was contacted out of concern that Jones was walking around with no shoes on, according to RPD. Gates Police Department did not report any signs that Jones was a danger to himself or others during their interaction. Jones did tell officers he was homeless, and officers convinced Jones to allow them to take him to a homeless shelter. RPD says officers got a pair of shoes for Jones.

RPD says Jones was taken to a shelter by Gates Police and admitted at 4:30 p.m. where he remained until around 11:30 p.m.
