WEBSTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Gov. Andrew Cuomo is expected to announce this week what regions are allowed to reopen schools.
News10NBC's Nikki Rudd spoke to a local woman who has been teaching kindergarten for 40 years to get her take on reopening plans.
"I'm ready," Peggy Garritano said. "I'm ready now. Let's do it!"
Garritano, as she's known by her students, has spent half of her teaching career at Plank Road North Elementary School in Webster.
Under the Webster Central School District reopening plan, kids in grades K-5 will go to school five days a week for half days.
"I think the K-5, those young kids, they're the ones that need that consistency," Garritano said.
She believes if remote learning continues, it could have a big impact on children.
"We've lost so much of that time from March, April, May and June, and now I think if we lose even more time, it's just going to snowball effect," Garritano said.
But there are also plenty of people who believe it's too soon to go back to school.
Rudd: "We've heard from a lot of teachers and teachers unions saying, 'Hey! This is too risky. They can't go back yet.' What's your response?"
Garritano: "My response is: I think we can follow the guidelines. Listening to what they suggest we do, I think we can do it. I'm looking at what's best for the kids and these families."
While teachers and parents wait for the final say from the governor, Garritano says it's time to open up our schools.
"Bring it back," Garritano said "I'm ready to go. Open the doors. I'm there. I need to see them. Those smiles. It's all about the smiles, even if it's six feet away."
If you're wondering about the higher grades for Webster schools, grades 6-12 will follow a hybrid model. Kids will be divided up in two groups for all day in-person instruction two days a week. The rest of the days will be remote learning.
Webster parents will be informed of what group their child is in by Wednesday night.
