PITTSFORD, N.Y. (WHEC) — It’s that time of year again. The sun is out and kids just get to be kids.

“It feels awesome just somewhere to go, just so many fun things to do,” Owen Davis said.

Eleven-year-old Owen Davis has been coming to YMCA Camp Arrowhead for the past seven years, but Monday's re-opening was extra special.

“It feels good just to talk to other people because they've been going through the same things as you probably and it's just fun to do these activities and I get to see some kids from my school, from my homeroom and it's just fun to interact with friends,” Davis said.

But like everything else, the start of camp comes with a new normal.

“So we've made a lot of changes so a couple of those is lowering our capacity, having smaller groups of kids, screening everyone when they arrive at camp, hand-washing stations we have them all throughout camp,” center Director Terrence McElduff said.

McElduff said along with that, all staff are required to wear face masks, sanitizing, cleaning and handwashing is done between each activity and he said with nearly 300 kids at camp and 90% of the staff returning, they are doing their part to make sure everyone stays healthy.

“It was what we are used to and getting back to it is what we needed, so we had extra staff on in the morning to ensure all the changes went smoothly and they did,” McElduff said.

From climbing adventures to sports and swimming he said not much has changed activity-wise, hoping to keep the camp experience and feel for the kids as normal as possible so they can still enjoy the rest of summer.

“Especially under these circumstances just coming here and doing this tower or doing archery is just awesome,” McElduff said.

There are five YMCA camps in Monroe County. All of the camps still have space available for the summer. If you're interested in signing your kids up, click here.
