IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. (WHEC) — The high school basketball sectional tournaments begin tonight and in honor of the tip-off to the sectional season our Scholar Athlete is a dynamic scorer who's led her team to a number-one seed.
"Never put your head down because that'll bring your team down,” Irondequoit senior Alahna Paige said. “Always keep your head up and be positive."
There's plenty to be positive around the Irondequoit girls basketball team, and a large reason is senior Alahna Paige.
Earlier this season the program's all-time leading scorer set the program record by scoring 50 points in a game... and her goals are as lofty as her point totals.
"This year I feel like we can take our talents all the way home, all the way home," Alahna said.
It took four years worth of being on varsity for Alahna to become this confident, early on she had to find her niche.
"It was kind of shocking at first knowing that I was only 14 starting as a freshman playing vs 18-year-olds, I just tried to play my best each game," Alahna said.
And playing her best every game has led to a chance to play basketball at Daeman College next year.
"I really like the coaching staff and players, I got a chance to meet them over the summer, academic, my major is mathematics and data science, I want to bring that into IT," Alahna said.
And that's with the goal of working in cybersecurity.
Congratulations Alahna Paige, the News10NBC Scholar-Athlete of the Week!
