ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Edison Tech junior Karian Garcia has no trouble in the classroom, posting a 4.03 GPA while playing three sports. However, it’s not too difficult for her.

"A couple hours of sports, a couple hours of learning, and I can do everything," she said through a translator.

That might not be much of a juggling act but Garcia is faced with something more challenging: A language barrier. It’s something that drives her more. And it’s satisfying when she reaches heights or classmates do feel better.

"I’m super proud of myself," she added. "I have to do a lot more than other students here to get to where I need to be."

Then, there’s the athlete in her. She’s played volleyball since she was 6 years old. It’s one of three varsity teams she’s involved with. The hope is to play in college somewhere in Buffalo. On the way there, she holds one message close to her heart.

"Not being able to speak English and be Latina in this country is difficult but I can get through it do a lot of things," Garcia said.

Congrats to Karian Garcia on being this week’s News10NBC Scholar-Athlete of the Week!
