PITTSFORD, N.Y. (WHEC) — The state championships for boys swimming are this weekend and this week's Scholar-Athlete is a record-setting senior who hopes to continue making waves.
"It's been around longer than me," Pittsford Mendon senior Liam Murphy said. "In my lifetime we've never lost."
They are the most dominant boys swimming program in Section V history, last month Pittsford won their 18th straight team Sectional title... a new record. And at the heart of the program is senior Liam Murphy.
"It feels good, but it's not just me,” Liam said. “A lot of the records we're breaking are relays, our whole team has risen up to that."
Liam won four events at Sectionals this year, two of which were relays, and he's thrilled to share his accomplishments with his teammates.
"It's cool to see because we've swam together our whole lives and we're breaking records we've always wanted to break," Liam said.
Next year, Liam will swim at Binghamton University and study computer science, but initially, the coach there said that his grades weren't good enough to get into the program.
"I started studying for the first time, that's when my grades went up,” Liam said. “I was always an 80 student, it's cool to see if I put in the work I get the result."
A winning attitude for someone who's used to winning, congratulations Liam Murphy, the News10NBC Scholar-Athlete of the Week!
