ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — The Rochester Americans have decided to continue playing the rest of the 2020-21 season without fans in the Blue Cross Arena.

New York State is willing to let indoor arenas open under certain precautions, including testing, contact tracing, social distancing, masking and staggered arrivals.

The Amerks released a statement Thursday saying they would continue to play without fans and the decision was based on capacity restrictions and logistical challenges that come with the COVID-19 protocols, especially given the American Hockey League's consolidated schedule.

"We thank all of our fans for their continued support and look forward to the time when we can safely welcome them all back to The Blue Cross Arena," the Amerks said in the statement.
