ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — For the first time in more than a year, the Rochester Red Wings were practicing at Frontier Field.
The practice on Sunday was the first time the Red Wings took the field in Rochester as a part of the Washington Nationals affiliation.
It's an exciting development for Red Wings General Manager Dan Mason, who says it's great to have baseball back.
"It's really exciting Rich, just to hear the pop of the mitt, the crack of the bat, guys are swinging in the cage right now, guys are in the bullpen pitching, and it's so great to know that this day that we've been waiting for, for so long, opening day, is coming up quick," he says.
"This means it's getting real, it's great to see the guys here in Rochester. All-new players, all-new coaching staff, thankfully Matt LeCroy was a player here. I know they're really excited about getting the season going, playing some real games and so are we. Obviously, we can't wait to welcome our fans back to watch some Red Wings baseball and let the Nationals era begin here in Rochester."
The Red Wings will begin play on May 4, but won't have their first home game until May 18.
