Lullabies & lacrosse

FAIRPORT, N.Y. (WHEC) -- At this time of year there are many rallying cries for teams hoping to make championship runs. For the Fairport lacrosse team, their rallying cry just so happens to be a children's lullaby.

"You are my sunshine, my only sunshine. You keep me happy when skies are gray."

It's not the most common way to fire up a high school lacrosse team, but "You Are My Sunshine" is the rallying cry for the Fairport Red Raiders.

"Coach Garrett had a huge part in this program for many years, that's kind of a tradition that he brought," says senior midfielder Ryan Derion.

Fairport assistant coach Randy Garrett has made the song a fixture with his team.

"We sing it in the locker room, we sing it on the bus and they sing it in the stands now," says Garrett.

A number of years ago, the father of one of the Fairport coaches was in the hospital and said that his favorite song was "You Are My Sunshine," now that song is a team building exercise for the Red Raiders.

"I think it just reminds us to keep it light, have fun with it, just enjoy every moment we get," says senior midfielder Mason Gasbarre.

Especially when those moments turn out to be a sectional championship.

"Physically in my stage of life I can't do many things," says Garrett, "but I still have great memories of playing at Fisher and the joy of winning a sectional trophy."

Fairport won the Class A lacrosse sectional championship on Tuesday night.

"Just unreal", says junior midfielder Tanner Soudan, "didn't hit me until after we won that we actually won, it felt amazing."

"It came back," adds Garrett, "meant a lot to me, so thrilled that they could feel the same joy from all those years."

A joy that now has a familiar refrain as the team celebrated their win on Tuesday by belting out the lyrics to "You Are My Sunshine."

Their next chance to sing "You Are My Sunshine" is after Regionals against Orchard Park at St. John Fisher College Saturday at 10 a.m.
