ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) — Opening day for Major League Baseball was supposed to be a week ago Thursday.

The Red Wings were supposed to start their season next week.

Right now the entire sport of baseball is in the sickest delay we've ever experienced... but there's one former Rochestarian who found a new twist to keep the sport alive with never-before-played games.

It's almost as if ESPN Classic, your old baseball card collection and March Madness all became one event, and it's not as farfetched as you might think.

Meet The Throwback League. The Throwback League is a podcast started by Brighton grad and former Red Wings announcer Josh Lewin.

It's a 48-team tournament of former World Series winners and great teams from the mid-’70s to early 2000s.

There's even a pregame show of sorts with John Miller and Bob Costas.

An algorithm determines the outcome and Lewin calls the plays as they would have happened.

"It's a great bar argument, which team would kick the other team's butt and now it's a way to figure that out," Lewin said.

While this is great for anyone craving sports, it's perfect for diehard baseball fans like Lewin.

“I grew up a Mets fan and Orioles fan too because of my time in Rochester,” Lewin said. “When those Orioles teams of ‘79 and ‘83 come up they're teams I rooted for, the ‘86 Mets were totally my team, I turned 18 the night the ball went through Buckner's legs."

Certainly, the greats of the game will make an impact, but it's also an opportunity to remember some forgotten players.

"I hadn't thought of Ed Sprague in probably 15-20 years,” Lewin said. “Those are the deep dive guys that I really enjoy, like an old pack of baseball cards."

Reminiscing about players of the past also brings back memories from real games he called.

Before calling big league games for more than 20 years Lewin called Red Wings games for parts of five seasons starting in 1990.

“Some great moments, obviously the Governor's Cup championship,” Lewin said. "I haven't gotten a championship since, got one in my first year and 0-29 since then, close with the Mets in 2015 but that Governor's Cup is what I've got."

That is of course until Lewin is behind the mic for the championship game of The Throwback League.

"It's been a little stroll down memory lane, but a totally fun project and especially in this time and weird place we're in, a little break from the chaos,” Lewin said. “Just to be hearing baseball again and the crack of the bat and the roar of the underneath the organ music."

Baseball will be back and the world will return to normal, but in the meantime, Josh Lewin's Throwback League podcasts are a full game in less than an hour.
