GATES-CHILI, N.Y. (WHEC) -- It takes dedication to reach the top of the podium in high school sports, and a little help from your parents goes a long way too.
"It's been a long grueling journey, but it's paid off in the end," says Gates-Chili senior Colton Crane.
He wrestles for the Spartans, and by definition, wrestlers are tough.
During his time competing in the sport, he has dislocated his shoulder and almost ran out of blood time when he nearly bit through his lip.
"My dad took a big goob of Vaseline, stuck it on my lip and sent me back out there," says Colton.
Before you flip out over the medical treatment, just know that the Crane boys know what they're doing.
"My father is an emergency medical physician at Strong Hospital and he got a wrestling scholarship that put him through nursing school, so I want to follow in his footsteps."
Next year Colton hopes to study biology with an eye on pre-med and if he chooses to wrestle in college, he'll enter the next level as the defending sectional champion.
"It was an incredible feeling. I faced this kid prior in counties and took a really hard loss and spent weeks training, just trying to get back that loss, it felt really good."
Congrats on the sectional title, and congratulations Colton Crane, the News10NBC Scholar-Athlete of the Week.
