ROCHESTER, N.Y. ( WHEC) -- Playing at the varsity level can be a challenging task, even more so when you start in middle school.

Yet, winning at the varsity level wasn't even the greatest achievement for Kara Oatman.

"I remember being really scared at first, but I kind of realized it's a great learning experience," says Oatman.

That experience was a unique one for the Honeoye Falls-Lima senior. At the time she was a 7th grader who was pulled up to the H-F-L varsity basketball team.

She says it's something that benefited her greatly.

"I was able to learn from everyone and that meant the world to me."

Kara is currently in her 6th year as a member of the varsity team, and as a sophomore, she helped the Cougars win the sectional title.

"That was such a huge difference between the previous years. Our record in 7th grade was 3-16 and being able to change that was a huge accomplishment for us."

But maybe the biggest difference that Kara makes is the sport that she helps with in the spring.

The National Honor Society member is also a student coach for the Unified basketball team, which helps disabled students play basketball.

"It's everything, being able to watch them progress throughout the season. It's so fun to be able to know that they're really enjoying it and getting something from it."

Best of luck the rest of the season and congratulations Kara Oatman, the News10NBC Scholar Athlete of the Week.
