VICTOR, N.Y. (WHEC) -- A dream season ended as the best in school history for the Victor Blue Devils last season.

"It was amazing, we bonded so well as a team," says Victor senior Kyra Grooms.

In 2018, Victor became the first AA team from Section V to win a softball state championship.

"Everyone worked hard, everyone got along, everyone knew their roll," adds Grooms.

Now that the calendar has turned to 2019, the goal is still the same and that starts with senior catcher Kyra Grooms.

"I work hard on being a good leader, including everyone and making sure that everyone has a voice," says Grooms.

The starter since she stepped on the diamond as a freshman, Grooms was named a Monroe County 1st team all-star last year and says she's learned a lot from her coach.

"Coach Collins has been great with teaching life lessons like hard work and dedication, she's taught a lot of good lessons."

In the classroom, Grooms' made the high honor roll every quarter of high school and is a member of the National Honor Society. Next year, she plans to study nursing at Clemson and may have been swayed by the success of their football team.

"I'm so excited for the football games. I think they're going to be so fun."

Congratulations Kyra Grooms, the News10NBC Scholar-Athlete of the Week!
