(WHEC) -- There are many students who are leaders in their school and as well for the team that they play for.
This week's News10NBC Scholar Athlete is not only a leader, she's also breaking barriers and carving her own path.
"When you're little and playing, it's a dream."
That dream for Maeghan Kennard is to one day wear a United States jersey and play in the Olympics, which is actually a possibility.
The Aquinas senior is in her fifth year as a member of the Lil' Irish varsity hockey team.
"I've been doing it for so long, I love being on the ice and skating, the game itself, the teammates, it's really exciting," says Maeghan.
But Maeghan isn't just a member of the team, she's a role model to younger players, especially the other girl who plays varsity hockey.
Her leadership on the ice is a big reason why she's one of the captains of the team.
"I was very proud and happy to be named captain because I've been around so long," says Maeghan."The fact that they chose me out of the guys we have was very humbling, I felt very accomplished."
Her hockey career doesn't end in high school, next year Maeghan will play D1 hockey at St. Michael's College in Vermont.
Aside from playing hockey, the National Honor Society member plans to study chemistry with an eye on their pre-med program.
Congratulations Maeghan Kennard, the News10NBC Scholar Athlete of the Week!
