ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) —  The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA) is postponing the football, volleyball and competitive cheer fall seasons until March 1.

NYSPHSAA officers decided late Wednesday afternoon.

Low and moderate-risk fall sports are still allowed to begin practices on Sept. 21, 2020, as previously announced.

The adjustment to the sports calendar gives some hope to students who enjoy playing those sports that they can actually play games in those sports.

"We all understand how important interscholastic activities are to athletes and communities all across the state, and if we can afford those student-athletes to play just a few games in the spring, then I think we've accomplished our goals," NYSPHSAA Executive Director Robert Zayas said. "Especially considering how many challenges our schools are faced with right now."

The start date for the spring sports season was pushed back to April 19.
