IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. (WHEC) -- It's hard enough to overcome a devastating injury... but to not only come back from the injury, become captain of multiple varsity teams and maintain a perfect GPA, well that earns you the distinction of becoming the News10NBC Scholar Athlete of the Week.
"Now I want to go every day and get better because you're not guaranteed that next day," says Irondequoit senior Maggie Vay. Entering her 3rd year on the Eagles varsity lacrosse team, Vay knows that not all that long ago, the ability to play her favorite sport was almost taken away from her. She tore her ACL as a sophomore and was out for the year, but even though she couldn't play, she still went to every practice.
"While they practiced I did rehab and they always cheered me on through that, they really pushed me to come back and start playing again," says Vay.
And it was that positive approach that Maggie now emulates as a senior. She was the captain of the Irondequoit volleyball and basketball teams.
"My whole team was there for me, not everybody has an injury, but everybody has a bad day or a rough time with their family, so the captain's there to bring everyone together."
Next year the National Honor Society member plans to study early education in hopes of becoming a teacher and she got a head start on that as a volunteer with 3rd graders in Irondequoit.
"It's awesome because they want to be there every day and learn and they're excited when we show up, awesome to see them progress and keep learning"
Keep doing great things, and congratulations Maggie Vay, the News10NBC Scholar Athlete of the Week!
