It's a long-standing tradition at Pittsford Mendon High School.
Every year, one senior soccer player is voted to wear the number nine jersey. It used to be Todd Pelino's jersey. The former Viking passed away during the Sept. 11 attacks.
"It's a great honor because he's a great guy", says Connor Krapf. "When you wear it, you try to be the best teammate and leader you can"
This year the Mendon captain Connor Krapf wore Todd Pelino's jersey.
"I'd like to say that every single practice I tried to be a leader, show what you're supposed to be doing, what's right, what's wrong and try to get the most out of practice," adds Krapf.
The National Honor Society member is transitioning to the basketball season now and in two and a half weeks, he will hit the hardwood for the Rainbow Classic, a battle against Sutherland, but also a fundraiser for the Golisano Children's Hospital.
"That game is awesome for the amount of good it does for the community. It brings the whole community together and the good it does for all the kids at Golisano."
Next year Connor plans to study engineering in college and eventually go to law school.
Congratulations Connor Krapf, the News10NBC Scholar Athlete of the Week, presented by Nixon Peabody and the Ide Family of Dealerships
