Time to practice: Players prepare for the big debut

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WHEC) - Before the talk switches to birdies and climbing up the leader board, Monday was an opportunity to practice.

That includes three-time major winner Vijay Singh and defending Senior PGA Champion Paul Broadhurst. But here in Rochester, a bunch of fans will most likely be cheering for hometown product Jeff Sluman.

"As soon as you drive in it's great. You look to your left as soon as you drive in on Kilbourn Road and it's beautiful. The golf course is there and that's what golf is all about," said Sluman.

After he makes that drive, Sluman can walk past his tree on the Hill of Fame near the 10th fairway and maybe pass along some friendly tips about the course to other golfers on the practice round.

"A couple of the guys. Tom Gillis hasn't ever played the good course. Larry Mize and Steve Pate have but you know, just kind of, where do you hit it? What do you think? Is it three-wood?" Sluman added.

After his practice round, Sluman gave us his initial assessment of the course.

"The golf course is in terrific shape. The rough is lush as you can imagine coming out of a spring and winter in Rochester, but it's in perfect shape and it's an extremely difficult test of golf."
