AVON, N.Y. (WHEC) — The regular season passed in the blink of an eye and we're on the final Friday before sectionals. So it's only fitting that this week's Game of the Week between Cal-Mum and Avon has a sectionals feel to it.
Only eight teams will advance to sectionals and there's a lot on the line. In some ways it's a must-win game for both teams.
"We've talked each week from week one how important each game is," saied Avon head coach Andy Englert. "I think the biggest thing is just being focused, being ready, having a good week of practice like we did, and being ready for the competition."
Cal-Mum has already secured its spot in the postseason, so the motivation to continue playing at a high level comes form season past.
"We didn't make sectionals last year, and that left kind of a bad taste in our mouths," said Cal-Mum head coach Billy Donegan. "So we're looking forward to being in sectionals, and to come off a good game, a good win, the last game of the year would go into sectionals with some momentum."
However, Avon is ranked seventh in secitional seeding and is still very much on the bubble.
"There's a lot of pressure going into it," siad Avon running back Mike Carrick. "If we don't win, I don't think we'll make it into sectionals. It's a must win, definitely."
