Washington Football Team to choose new name on Feb. 2

ASHBURN, Va. (WHEC) — The WFT has gone with a generic name after dropping the Redskins name it had used since 1932.

But 19 months after changing to the "Football Team", Dan Snyder’s franchise is looking to adopt an official nickname.

Team president Jason Wright said on social media that the new name wouldn’t be one of the early favorites in the process. In September, Washington had cut its list to eight: Armada, Presidents, Brigade, Redhawks, Commanders, RedWolves, Defenders and Football Team.

The team had some trouble in the past with choose a name by legal standards. The "RedWolves" nickname holds a trademark from another team.

"I can’t wait to see the team on the field and the fans in the stands with the rebrand on. It’s gonna be nice," said former Washington player and current senior advisor Doug Williams.

And yes, there’s a chance Washington just keeps "Football Team" after all.
