WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. (WHEC) — There will be no NASCAR at Watkins Glen this year.
NASCAR’s official Twitter account released an updated 2020 schedule that does not include Watkins Glen.
There was originally a race scheduled for mid-August at the track which is about 80 miles from Rochester. The event is being shifted to Daytona because NASCAR cannot meet New York's quarantine requirements for out-of-state visitors.
Most teams are based out of Charlotte and the Carolinas are on the list for quarantine.
Following the announcement, the president of Watkins Glen International Michael Printup released the following statement:
“The dynamic situation we are all confronting is impacting our daily lives and activities in unimaginable ways,” Printup said. “While we are disappointed we will not experience NASCAR in New York this year, as we look broadly at the current pandemic in our country and around the world, we must focus first on everyone’s safety and well-being as NASCAR seeks the best way to continue delivering a remarkable on-track product week after week.”
Watkins Glen says ticket holders will automatically receive a credit for the full amount of their purchase, plus an additional 20% of the total amount paid. They can also apply for a refund.
