BATAVIA, N.Y. – Saturday downtown Batavia hosted its first Box Car Derby race in over 40 years. 28 kids from Genesee County took to downtown Batavia to try and win the Suozzi trophy. The trophy is named after Joseph Suozzi, who won the race back in 1951. His son helped organize the event in his honor.

“The beginning of course, it’s our first year of the event, everything gets a little stressful,” said Chris Suozzi. “Now seeing it all put together, it’s wonderful. We just love the smiles of the kids. Boys and girls, which is fantastic. The families, the grandmothers, the aunts and uncles, the friends, are all here today, beautiful day.”

The kits for the cars were supplied to the kids free of charge. Organizers say they look forward to doing it again next year.
