Consumer Alert: Free Class Launched to Teach Seniors and Others about Smart Devices

The News10NBC Team details breaking News, Traffic and Weather.

VICTOR, N.Y. – A local AT&T store manager is offering free classes to help people of all ages learn how to use their smartphones and tablets.

According to AARP, 91% of seniors have a smartphone or other smart tech. 95-year-old Janet Brady says her whole world dimmed as her eyesight worsened but her iPad changed that.

“I can read the iPad. I can adjust it. I’ve read three books since November and I’ve loved it,” Brady said.

AT&T store manager and tech guru Bryan Rogers teaches customers how to use their tech every day and that gave him an idea.

“I started up a little class to kind of help them kind of get into the new century and not have to rely on family is most important,” Rogers said.

News10NBC’s Deanna Dewberry asked Rogers, “So you would actually be a gift not only to that person but also to the relatives who no longer have to do the navigating for them?”

“Yeah, so with this the main aspect of it is being able to use your phone, being able to use your tablet, being able to use your electronic devices,” Rogers responded.

Deanna Dewberry: “There will be so many people who ask, do I have to be an AT&T customer to come to the class.”

Bryan Rogers: “You do not. You do not have to be an AT&T customer. Just come on in and we’ll be more than happy to help you.”

Deanna Dewberry: “At no cost?”

Bryan Rogers: “No cost. No cost associated with it.”

While his original intention was to help seniors, Rogers says the classes are open to anyone, from those new to the net, to folks who just want to learn more about their phone’s features.

“I have a Pro Max and it has all these little AI niceties, and I know I’m not getting the most out of my phone because I don’t know how to use them all,” Dewberry said.

“Right. That’s the majority of people,” Rogers agreed.

But through this class, he hopes to help the young and the young at heart stay connected.

“It’s changed my life because I’m not so confined, and I feel like I might be a part of what’s going on outside,” Brady said.

The connection has improved her quality of life. Here are the details for the next class.
