‘You’re carrying on his memory’; Cleveland PD comes together to honor fallen officer from Webster
WEBSTER, N.Y. — The Cleveland Police Department came together on Friday for a candlelit vigil to mark one year since Cleveland Police Officer Jamieson Ritter, a Webster native, was killed in the line of duty.
Officer Ritter, 27, was killed while responding to a neighborhood, looking for a man wanted for assault. Police say the suspect opened fire, hitting Ritter. Ritter is remembered as a McQuaid Jesuit and Syracuse University graduate, who went on to serve in the Ohio Army National Guard.
Our NBC affiliate in Cleveland went to the remembrance ceremony. See their coverage in the video in this story. Fr. Doug Brown, chaplain for the Cleveland Police Department, spoke about Ritter’s service and sacrifice.
“This is a heavy day. This was a difficult day for this division, having to lose somebody in the line of duty, somebody so young with so much potential, so gifted,” said Cleveland Police Chaplain Fr. Doug Brown, Cleveland Police Chaplain. “…You have to acknowledge the loss, you have to work through the loss, and you have to recognize that, as an officer, you’re doing something good still, and you’re carrying on his memory.”
Back in the Rochester area, the community has honored Ritter’s service through a foundation in his name, a memorial hockey game, and by renaming the Lakefront Lodge in Webster to the Jamieson Ritter Memorial Lodge. On X, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office posted in memory of Ritter.
In a statement from Ritter’s family, they say their “hearts remain heavy with grief, but also full of gratitude.” Read the full statement:

We are especially grateful to those who have taken the time to learn about Jamieson’s story—his selfless service, his unwavering dedication to others, and his deep love for his community.”
“Jamieson lived a life of purpose. Whether serving in the U.S. Army National Guard or as a police officer in Cleveland, he led with courage, compassion, and conviction. His legacy is not only one of service, but of hope—a reminder that one person can make a difference.”
“On this Fourth of July, our family will be together in seclusion to honor Jamieson’s life and reflect on his enduring impact. We ask for privacy as we gather in remembrance, but we also want to express our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has stood beside us this past year. Your kindness has lifted us, and your continued support of the Jamieson Ritter Foundation ensures that his spirit of service lives on.”
