ROCHESTER, N.Y. — This good question is about taking care of each other during the holidays. There are tons of great causes to donate to around the holidays.

What if you want to take your giving to the next level by adopting a family? If you’re looking to bring a little joy to a family in need this year, here’s how.

Teresa wanted to know: “How do you go about sponsoring a family in need for Christmas? I know there’s all these organizations that you can send donations to but I want this to go directly to a local family.”

Here are just a few ways to do that locally.

Spiritus Christi Church has an adopt-a-family program. More than 100 families are involved. Organizers ask that you email them at spiritusadoptafamily@gmail.com – they will connect you and give you the information you need.

Local non-profit Primetime 585 has several different ways to help families. It’s looking for toys and coats for about 300 kids, especially kids 10 and older. You can give the organizer a call at 585-230-0771. They can match you with a family.

The YWCA also has a program which has helped more than 250 families so far this season. Many of its families are still looking for basics like pots and pans and household items. If you want to help them cross those things off their holiday lists, call the YWCA and it will work with you to find a good fit.

If you want to help a family by donating a single item, Catholic Charities Family and Community Services has a Single Gift of Joy Wish List through Amazon, where you can select a specific item that will help make a family’s holiday a little bit brighter this year.
