ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A 71-year-old man is accused of stabbing another man, 68, to death with a kitchen knife in a community room at Winton Gardens Towers on Sunday evening.

Raul Lazcano is charged with second-degree murder. Rochester Police say he and the victim, Jose Hernandez, both lived at the apartment complex on East Main Street.

According to a felony complaint filed in Rochester City Court, Hernandez was sitting in a chair and speaking with other residents when Lazcano stabbed him in the head and the top of his ear around 6:20 p.m.

An ambulance rushed Hernandez to Strong Hospital, where he died just under 40 minutes after he was stabbed.

Lazcano pleaded not guilty to the murder in City Court. He’ll be back in court on Friday. Michael Harrigan, the chief of the major felony bureau at the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office, called the crime senseless.

“There seems to be no reason for this. It seems to be senseless, totally senseless, and I know we say that a lot but that’s really the case here,” Harrigan said.
