IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. Boxing legend Carmen Basilio is being honored with his own street.

Boxwood Drive in Irondequoit has been temporarily renamed Carmen Basilio Way. The move is part of this weekend’s 30th annual Rochester Boxing Hall of Fame Induction Dinner.

Basilio was a member of the 1990 inaugural induction class of the International Boxing Hall Of Fame. He retired in 1961 with a 56-16-7 record that included 27 knockouts.

“Carmen Basilio was an incredible person, a humanitarian, one who would do anything for anyone,” County Legislator Mercedes Vazquez Simmons said. “But he had an incredible, incredible way of greeting everyone, which was with a left hook.”

In his later years, Basilio and his wife made Irondequoit their home. He died in 2012.
