ROCHESTER, N.Y. It was Small Business Saturday, a day to celebrate and support local shops.

Many people were in the spirit all over town. News10NBC talked to a few of them outside Cook’s World on Monroe Avenue about why shopping locally is important all year round.

“I think it’s what makes communities interesting and different from each other,” shopper Ruth Rappaport-Kristal said. “You can go to Rochester, you can be in Syracuse, Buffalo. If it’s only chain stores, they all look like the same city.”

“They work so hard and they give great customer service,” shopper Gerri Sears said. “And they’re in our community so I think that’s really important.”

“It keeps the money in our community, it keeps businesses open and it makes Rochester a better place to live so all that’s much more important than the big box stores,”  shopper Katherine Lucarelli said.

Cook’s World is a kitchen-supply store that’s been serving Rochester for 44 years.
