UPDATE: Video shows missing U of R professor falling off bridge into river; Search continues

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Rochester Police say that video shows Heikki Rantakari, the 44-year-old missing University of Rochester professor, falling from a pedestrian bridge into the Genesee River on Saturday, Oct. 21.

RPD has been investigating his disappearance for days. Officers say their investigation led them to video of him falling from the bridge at the end of Bragdon Place early in the morning.

RPD’s scuba teams have searched the Genesee River over the past two days but haven’t been able to find Rantakari. Drones and the New York State Police Aviation Unit have also been involved in the search.

Officers say there is no evidence of foul play and the efforts to find Rantakari are continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or the RPD Major Crimes Unit at (585)-428-7157.

Here is a statement that the U of R released soon after Rantakari was reported missing:

“Heikki Rantakari is an Associate Professor of Economics and Management at the University of Rochester’s Simon Business School. He was reported missing after he did not show up to teach a scheduled class on campus on Saturday morning. We thank all local law enforcement agencies and the University of Rochester’s Department of Public Safety in supporting this investigation. We’re asking for the public’s support in reporting anything that relates to Professor Rantakari’s whereabouts by calling 911. The University is hopeful that he is found safe very soon.”
