GATES, N.Y. — Gates Police are looking for whoever shot two people in the parking lot of Tinseltown Movie Theater on Friday morning.

Officers responded to the parking lot on Buffalo Road shortly after 1 a.m. after getting 911 calls. They performed first aid on both victims before ambulance crews and Gates Fire Department crews arrived. The victims, who are in their late teens and early twenties, were taken to the hospital and are expected to survive.

Gates Police say that New York State troopers, Monroe County sheriff’s deputies, and Ogden Police helped with crowd control during the response. Gates Police Chief Robert Long said there was a crowd of about 100 people outside the theater at the time the shots went off.

Police say that this was a targeted attack, but don’t know how many suspects there are since they fled the scene before officers arrived. Police said they also don’t now the motive behind the shooting.

“It definitely looks like there was some sort of altercation or previous knowledge of each other,” Long said. “It does not look like a random act of someone running out and doing anything, it does look like this was targeted.”

Ernest Fynn, a resident of Gates, share his thoughts about the shooting.

“To think that something like this happened here, it is concerning. I don’t know what I can do about it or what they can do about it. But it definitely makes you pause,” said Fynn. “I came to watch a movie, not to get shot.”

Police said they are working to get surveillance footage from the area. Anyone with information is asked to call Gates Police at 247-2262 or email tips@townofgates.org.
