ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A body pulled from the Genesee River on Sunday evening has been identified as missing man Jared Oswald.

The Rochester Police Department’s scuba squad found the body near Turning Point Park, the place where Oswald was last seen. The Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the body on Monday.

Oswald, known to his loved ones as “Bear”, was last seen on Monday morning. Friends and family said he packed for work as usual, but surveillance video shows him going to the park instead. Family members who News10NBC spoke with described Oswald as adventurous and said it wasn’t like him to lose communication with his family.

Friends, family, and volunteers had been searching for Oswald daily and encouraging residents to check their doorbell cameras for any video that could help. They set up a command center at RCSD School No. 42 on Lake Avenue to coordinate search efforts.

“He’s not just a face on a poster. He’s just not a name on the news. He’s a father. He’s a son. He’s our brother. He’s an uncle. He’s a beloved family community friend to everyone,” said Esther Kwong, Oswald’s sister.

Oswald’s family told News10NBC he had a big heart and is leaving a big void for them to fill.

“He was pretty much an extraordinary person. He always had a kind smile. He had a soft word and a generous soul. He saw the good in others when they didn’t really see it in themselves,” Kwong said.

After pulling Oswald from the river, police waited a day for the medical examiner to identify the body.

“Oh my goodness it was like completely numb,” said Oswald’s brother, Jon Oswald. “I don’t think we’ve even grieved yet like it’s so weird. Like this is a little shaky but it, like after all we’ve been through there’s still like a process that has to unfold.”

The RPD Criminal Investigation Section is still investigating the circumstances around Oswald’s death. Anyone with information is asked to call 911.
