Irondequoit Police: Man dies in crash after fleeing from officers, leading to chase
IRONDEQUOIT, N.Y. — Irondequoit Police say a 62-year-old man is dead after his car fled from officers, leading to a chase and a crash on Wednesday night.
Irondequoit Police tried to pull over the car on Portland Avenue near Rochester General Hospital around 8 p.m., saying it had switched license plates.
In surveillance video obtained from a nearby convenience store, atleast two cruisers are seen passing by with their lights on just before the crash happened.
That car crashed at the intersection of Portland Avenue and Chapin Street. It hit the median, went into the opposite lane, and hit the other car head-on. The Rochester Fire Department performed first-aid on all people injured in the crash.
The people in the other car, 60 and 61, were seriously injured but are expected to survive. The 62-year-old suspect died of his injuries at the hospital. Police said they are not releasing the suspects name at this time.
Nearby neighbors said they heard a loud boom and went outside to see the crash.
Irondequoit’s chief of police said the officer involved in the chase is doing well mentally, but did not comment further as the New York State Attorney General’s Office is taking over the investigation.
As with any police chase that ends in a death, the Attorney General’s Office will investigate in order to see if all rules and regulations were followed before, during and after the crash and chase.
News10NBC has reached out to the Attorney General’s Office for a statement and is waiting a response.
