Veteran Geneva Police Officer accused of selling Adderall while on duty
CANANDAIGUA, N.Y. – A thirteen-year veteran of the Geneva Police Department has been accused of selling Adderall while on duty.
The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of Officer Michael Tapscott during a news conference on Wednesday. The 41-year-old is charged with felony criminal sale of a controlled substance and official misconduct.
“Each of us understands that no one is above the law, including police officers,” Sheriff David Cirencione said. “That’s why, upon notification of these allegations, our special investigations division made this case their number one priority over multiple ongoing cases.”
Deputies began investigating after getting a tip that an officer sold a controlled substance to an adult at a business in Geneva while in uniform and driving a marked police car. Cirencione said the sheriff’s office special investigation unit executed multiple search warrants and combed through hours of evidence. Investigators say Tapscott had sold dextroamphetamine, a form of Adderall requiring a prescription.
“All of us standing up here, and the hundreds of men and women on the front lines protecting this county and this region every day, understand the magnitude of these allegations,” Cirencione said.
Eveland said Tapscott was a Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) instructor for multiple years before withdrawing from the program in early 2024. He was a road patrol officer.
Deputies arrested Tapscott on Wednesday morning after conducting multiple interviews. He has been arraigned and released on a ticket to appear in court on May 14.
Ashley Brooks, a Geneva resident, says she will not place any judgement until it goes through the courts, and she believes Geneva Police Department is one of the best she has ever encountered.
“I have firsthand experience with them. I love every single one of them. They’ve worked with us, through a lot of health issues,” said Brooks. “I have a chronic illness, and, they work with me and, keeping my son in line. And they have been godsend. Every single one of them. So I have nothing bad to say about a single cop.”
Earlier this month, News10NBC learned that Tapscott was placed on administrative leave. Chief Police Robert Eveland said he has received Tapscott’s resignation letter.
