EVENTS: Memorial for RochesterWorks director, shaving head for a cure, and Syracuse basketball in Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Here are some events happening around town this Friday, the weekend, and beyond.

Friday afternoon: RochesterWorks, a non-profit that has provided employment services for nearly two decades, is holding its memorial for its former executive director who died at age 73.

The outdoor remembrance ceremony starts at 12:30 p.m. at RochesterWorks headquarters at 100 College Avenue, Suite 200. Peter Pecor died in January 2021. He led the workforce development organization for more than 14 years.

Friday night: The Syracuse men’s and women’s basketball teams will be in Rochester on Friday for a night of shooting competitions, dunk contests, and inter-team scrimmages.

The teams are playing at “Monroe Madness” from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Blue Cross Arena before their season tips off. Tickets are as low as $10. The event will also feature an interactive fan competition. You can get tickets here.

Sunday: The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is hosting its second annual head-shaving event to raise money for childhood cancer research.

The event runs from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Red Jug Pub in Brockport, 38 Merchant Street. People can come in to have their heads shaved to help support the foundation’s mission of finding cures and better treatments for kids with cancer. The goal is to raise $10,000.

Monday, October 24: The Penfield Symphony Orchestra is holding its first concert of the season on October 24.

It’s called “a time for celebration.” The concert will include American Folk Tunes and a tribute to famous composer John Williams. It’s at the Penfield High School auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults. You can get tickets here.
