ROCHESTER, N.Y. — One day after Rochester City School District Superintendent Dr. Carmine Peluso announced his resignation, parents are speaking out about what they’d like to see when it comes selecting his replacement.

The Churchville-Chili Central School District announced Tuesday that Peluso would be its new superintendent, and on Tuesday night that district’s school board approved a contract with him.

In Rochester, for School 10 parent Cyqunthia Miles, Dr. Peluso’s announcement came as a shock and surprise.

“You left everybody high and dry to go to another school district, so it’s definitely unfair,” Miles said.

Faced with the school both her children go to closing down at the end of the academic year, Miles said having leadership take off at the same time adds insult to injury.

“I was very adamant of trying to keep the schools open and I did everything possible, so I’m definitely upset,” Miles said.

For some parents, the resignation announced on Tuesday raises doubts about the stability of the school district and its leadership.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Peluso said his decision to leave RCSD for the Churchville-Chili School District was mainly a personal decision guided by what is best for his family.

“You’ve all heard me say my wife’s a teacher in this district for 26 years as well, so it’s nothing that I take lightly. It was just a hard decision after a lot of reflection and a lot of conversation with my family and inner circle about what I’m going to do,” Peluso said. He will begin his new role with Churchville-Chili on July 1, taking over for Dr. Lori Orologio, who is retiring.

Still, parents like Emmese Daniels, who has a student in School 16, said she remains hopeful that the next superintendent will carry on the legacy of improving students’ lives.

“Just more initiatives for our children. Just a real focus on keeping the kids in the city, building them up, and having better teachers, I guess,” Daniels said.

Daniels said that nothing will replace Dr. Peluso.

“You know, I thought he was going to stay for a while. I heard about some initiatives he had in place so we were looking forward to those,” Daniels said.
