Apartment building destroyed, firefighter injured, classes canceled at Pal-Mac Intermediate School after fire

MACEDON, N.Y. (WHEC) — An apartment building is uninhabitable, but all of its residents are safe, and a firefighter has a sprained ankle after a fire in Macedon.

It happened on West Street near the Palmyra-Macedon Intermediate School, where classes are canceled Tuesday.

It started at around 2 p.m. on Monday and Fire Chief Chris Creamer said it took about three hours and six fire departments to get it under control.

Creamer said oxygen bottles began exploding as crews arrived. There was heavy smoke and fire.

A firefighter tripped and sprained an ankle, but all of the residents of the apartment were able to get out safely.

Students at the Palmyra-Macedon Intermediate School nearby were kept inside as a precaution, but Creamer said they were never in danger.

The six apartments inside the building are now vacant, half due to fire damage and half due to smoke damage.

Director of Facilities James Carlett said the Palmyra-Macedon Intermediate School building needs to be aired out, which is why classes are canceled on Tuesday.
