ONTARIO, N.Y. (WHEC) — Wayne Central Middle School was pretty much locked down for most of Monday after a school employee armed with a knife, was involved in a physical altercation with another employee. A school resource officer and the armed individual were both injured in the incident.
None of the students were harmed and were locked down safely at the school.
The Sheriff’s Office told News10NBC the two were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
For a few hours, the parking lot here at the school was filled with emergency vehicles. The Sheriff’s Office told News10NBC one of their deputies, who also serves as a school resource officer, was injured after confronting a school employee who was armed with a knife.
Kristanna Aman, a fifth-grader, described what happened when the school went into lockdown.
"So when we got into the lunchroom all the lights had to go down," Kristanna said. "All the doors had to be locked, and all of the teachers had like a panicked face on them.”
Some students were panicked as well when they realized this was not a drill.
"Me and my friends were thinking that we were going to die because there’s cops running around in the hallways when we were getting our lunch,” Kristanna said.
Her mother, Crystal Rowe, and a few other parents rushed to the school after finding out about the lockdown.
“I called and got a ride here as soon as I could to pick up my daughter. I cannot understand why she called me crying in hysterics. I mean I would’ve been scared too,” Rowe said.
“I just came here because I figured my child is absolutely terrified," Lissa Lagana added. "We want to pick up our kids.”
The Sheriff’s Office did not release any additional information regarding the incident, only saying two school employees were involved before their deputy arrived to assist.
A criminal investigation is underway.
